Istituto d'Istruzione Superiore "A. Lombardi"

Alessandro Lombardi’ High School is located in Airola, a small town of roughly 8,000 people in the south of Italy, in the province of Benevento and not far from Naples. It has about 900 students who can follow different study paths: Classical Lyceum, Scientific Lyceum, Musical Lyceum, School of Economics, and Vocational School and 120 teachers. The duration of the school is 5 years and the students are between the age 14-19.
The school includes a wide range of students in terms of socio-economic status, who are equally divided into the different school paths.
The students from the Lyceums study Italian and foreign language and civilization (English, German and Spanish), Latin, and Maths, as their majors; they also study ancient Greek (Classical Lyceum), History and Philosophy, Geography, Science and Biology, Arts, and Sports, instead the students from the technical accounting school study apart the core subjects they also study economics, legislation. Our school is particularly active in the field of the evaluation of the historical, archaeological, artistic and natural heritage of the local territory. The school educational planning includes several projects and workshops, (Project of Samnite Archaeology, Workshop for the analysis and study of the territory topography, Didactic paths of Biology and Natural Sciences in collaboration with the Eco-park Association of Airola) aiming at the implementation of the students’ knowledge, skills and awareness of the local environment. As the Art teacher uses CLIL methodology in some modules of her syllabus, the students have the opportunity to further strengthen their linguistic skills in English and to use English to communicate the content. As school, we find this project very motiviating,we think it important to explore cultural diversity. It is important to speak and discuss about it; because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first, we must have a level of understanding about each other. Learning about other cultures helps us understand different perspectives within the world in which we live. It helps dispel negative stereotypes. In addition, cultural diversity helps us recognize and respect “ways of being” that are not necessarily our own. So that as we interact with others we can build bridges to trust, respect, and understanding across cultures. Furthermore, this diversity makes our country a more interesting place to live. As people from diverse cultures contribute language skills, new ways of thinking, new knowledge, and different experiences. The teachers involved will be the literature teacher, the English teacher and the German teacher teacher.,but the project coordinator will be LINDA FUCCIO.Just in case one of them leave the school, other teachers of the same subjects will take their places. As school and staffs,we are expert on CLIL method and this will contribute us to run the project.

One of the objectives of our school is to foster the achievement of the B2 level in English and French to as many of our students as possible. We think that joining this Project can help us in two different ways, first by motivating our students and offering them ways to improve their English and second by obtaining results on how students learn languages it can be easy to implement possible improvements to our foreign language classes. Here are different reasons why our school wants to join this project:
* To offer our students ways of better understanding and experience diversity and globalization.Learning and working with people from other cultures will help them be global citizens in the future. We believe that type of collaboration helps to improve our students soft skills.
*As a vocational school , we believe that the professionals of the future have to learn to work in virtual teams and to use electronic collaboration tools. This project offers us this possibility.
*To improve the level of English of our students: we consider that using English in a real context will improve their English results and so it will help to achieve one of the schools objectives: to help our students get a B2 level of English. * To offer the school teachers new methods of teaching and motivating students.
The key people in charge of running the project will be the Foreign language department of the school. We are a group of 7 teachers. We are public workers and in case we get ill the government places new teachers to substitute us.
